"First of all, use your mind" Morihei Ueshiba

Water bottle

We train hard for 2 hours at a go, and it's imperative you keep well hydrated otherwise you'll wake up with a headache the next day.

Bokken, Jo and Tanto

The teaching and training of aikido is often aided by the use of wooden weapons - a bokken (sword), Jo (staff) and tanto (dagger). There are often plenty to share around, but once you've been training for a while you may wish to get your own.

Gi

This is the training suit. If you're just coming along to give aikido a go then simply wear a long-sleeved top and a pair of loose-fitting trousers - a Gi will be worth investing in if you start to take training more seriously. See here for local stockists.

Personal Hygiene

We do get rather sweaty - as it's at the end of a working day for many of us - and often get very close to one another.

Sandals

Useful for getting from the changing rooms to the dojo.

Pen and Paper

The moves, techniques, throws and 'pins' that we practice all use Japanese names - you may want to write a few things down at the end of the session...
